Simple Gratitude Practices to End the Year on a Positive Note

A guide to embracing gratitude, stepping out of your comfort zone, and ending the year with self-care and intention.

As the year draws to a close, we’re given a unique opportunity to reflect—not just on what we’ve achieved, but on the lessons, the small joys, and even the challenges that shaped us. This time of year is perfect for slowing down, savoring the little things, and thinking about how we want to move forward. Gratitude is a powerful tool for doing just that—it helps us pause, appreciate where we are, and build momentum for where we want to go.

For me, 2024 was a year of stepping out of my comfort zone in ways I never thought I could. Starting this blog was a dream I’d held onto for years, but fear and self-doubt kept holding me back. I worried about failing, not being “good enough,” or not knowing where to start. But with small, intentional steps, I began to trust myself. I learned that progress doesn’t have to be perfect—every little step forward counts.

Gratitude has been my anchor in this journey. It’s helped me embrace where I am, trust the process, and take bold steps toward the life I want to build. In this post, I’m sharing simple gratitude practices to help you reflect on 2024, along with ways to step out of your comfort zone, nurture your self-care, and create space for growth. Let’s make 2025 the year we stop holding ourselves back. I’d love to hear your reflections—reach out to me on Instagram, Threads, or Facebook, find cozy inspiration on Pinterest, check out my Benable recommendations, and sign up for my newsletter to join the journey.

1. Reflect on the Year with Gratitude

Gratitude is a grounding way to reflect on the year and shift your focus toward the positive. It’s about noticing the moments—big and small—that brought you joy, taught you lessons, and helped you grow.

Start a Gratitude Journal

Grab a notebook or download my gratitude journal printable to get started. Write down three things you’re grateful for this year. These could be moments of connection with loved ones, a personal achievement, or even something simple, like the way the first sip of coffee feels on a chilly morning.

This year, one of my gratitude moments came when I received the first comment on my blog. It wasn’t just words—it was proof that taking the leap to start Small Possibilities was worth it.

Quick Tip:

Break your gratitude reflections into categories, like “moments of joy,” “lessons learned,” or “unexpected surprises.” Seeing your year through this lens can help you appreciate it fully.

2. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Gratitude isn’t just about looking back—it’s about recognizing the opportunities right in front of us. One of the most powerful ways to honor your journey is to take the leap you’ve been holding back on.

Do the Thing You’ve Been Dreaming About

• Have you been wanting to start an Etsy shop, learn how to crochet, or take that watercolor class? Now is the time to stop waiting for “the perfect moment.”

• This blog was my leap out of my comfort zone. I didn’t have all the answers, and it wasn’t perfect, but every step brought me closer to my dream. You’ll learn as you go—just start.

Break It Down

Feeling overwhelmed? Start small. For example:

• If you want to open an Etsy shop, begin by creating one listing.

• If you’re dreaming of starting a blog, brainstorm five potential topics or take 30 minutes to explore platforms like WordPress.

• Want to try a new hobby? Buy a beginner kit or sign up for a local class.

3. Make Self-Care a Resolution

Gratitude and self-care go hand in hand. When you take care of yourself, you’re better able to appreciate the life you’re building. Self-care doesn’t have to mean grand gestures—it’s about creating small, intentional habits that nourish your body, mind, and spirit.

Daily Self-Care Practices

• Start the day with a gratitude ritual: Write down one thing you’re grateful for or take a mindful moment while sipping your morning coffee.

• Make space for quiet: Read, meditate, or simply sit in stillness for five minutes each day.

• Prioritize rest: Set a bedtime that allows you to wake up feeling refreshed.

Bigger Self-Care Goals for 2025

• Consider setting a resolution around self-care, like taking a weekly yoga class, going on a solo coffee date, or dedicating an evening to a creative hobby like crochet.

• One of my 2025 goals is to create more balance in my life—building a consistent routine that blends creativity, mindfulness, and rest.

4. Celebrate Small Wins

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned this year is that progress doesn’t have to be perfect. Even the smallest step forward is a step in the right direction.

Focus on Getting 1% Better Each Day

Instead of overwhelming yourself with big resolutions, focus on small, actionable goals. For example:

• If you want to read more, start with one page a day.

• If you’re working on a creative project, spend 10 minutes on it daily.

• If you’re trying to improve your mental health, begin with a single gratitude practice each morning.

This year, I embraced the idea of being “1% better every day.” Some days it was as simple as publishing a single blog post or learning a new editing trick for Pinterest. Each small win added up to meaningful progress.

5. Look Ahead with Intention

Gratitude can be a compass for shaping your future. Reflect on what brought you joy in 2024 and let those insights guide your 2025 goals.

Gratitude-Fueled Goals for 2025

• Spend more time on things that light you up, whether that’s crafting, connecting with loved ones, or exploring new hobbies.

• Build consistency in small ways—whether it’s creating a morning routine, setting aside time for your dreams, or staying engaged with your community.

• Step out of your comfort zone: Take that class, try that recipe, or start that blog you’ve been thinking about.

For me, 2025 is all about consistency—not just in my personal routines, but in building this community. Small Possibilities has been a dream for years, and I’m so excited to give it my all. Together, we can create a space that inspires, uplifts, and encourages each other to chase our dreams and savor the little things.

Conclusion: Let’s Create Something Beautiful Together

As we close out 2024, let’s embrace gratitude—not just as a way to reflect on the past, but as a foundation for the future. Whether it’s journaling, trying something new, or simply showing yourself kindness, these small steps can make a big impact.
